The temple Island is surrounded by the water of Chilika Lake from all sides. The temple got its name as Maa Kalijai is worshiped inside the temple.It is strong belief that once a girl name Jai is traveling along with her father in a boat to the island for her marriage. At that time a severe storm came and the boat crashed here. All the peoples present in the boat survived except the girl Jai. After the incident many fisherman account of listening the voice of that girl. Jai came in his father-in-law's dream and said, "I will stay here, build my temple here, I will be worshiped here." As a result they started worshiping her in a temple. The temple got the name Maa Kalijai from the Goddess Kali and the girl Jai. Whoever travel to the Chilika lake must visit this temple as it is a holy place.How to Reach

Maa Kalijai temple is located in an island of Lake Chilika.To reach this place you have to come to Balugaon .Boat facility for Kalijai Island is available from Barkul,Balugaon and Rambha.
Distance between Bhubaneswar to Balugaon is approx. 104 km.
You can reach here by bus,by train or by hiring private taxi.
